Gen 1:20 | scripture pictures @ alittleperspective.com

The first occurrence.

And God Elohiym said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let winged creatures fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” Gen 1:20

The primitive root.

Strong’s H8318 שרץ sherets, a concrete object meaning, “swarming things;” from Strong’s H8317 שרץ sharats, a primitive root meaning, “to swarm.”

shin ש = two front teeth, thus sharp, press, eat, two, again
resh ר = head of man, thus head, first, top, beginning, man
tsadey צ ץ = trail, thus a man concealed, journey, chase, hunt

The story: The two front teeth, shin, can convey the idea of plurality and multiplication, as anything x2 increases its number. So, multiplied (shin) heads (resh) which creep (tsadey, as a hunter does along a trail); i.e., the swarming of creeping things.

The Hebrew Testament Biblical text is from the 1917 Jewish Publication Society edition posted by Mechon Mamre online. I have aligned the verse and chapter numbers to the KJV. The Greek Testament Biblical text is from the 1769 Authorized King James edition posted by Official King James Bible online.  For both Testaments, I have modernized words, spelling, and grammar. Translation changes to correct anti-Messiah and anti-Torah bias are noted in the text. The linked studies, chiastic structures, and Scripture pictures are my own and are copyright © Christine Miller.
